PANOS DE PRATO
Panos de Prato. Beet pigment, bleach, flour sack, thread, and nails. 33in x 45in | 2022.
In Brazil, traditional kitchen towels are bleached white to be hand-painted or embroidered and often finished with crochet trim. Panos de Prato is stained with beet juice as a signifier of Santos's memories of women's manual labor through generations. Bleach was then applied to remove the evidence of some of the work allowing for intentional patterns to emerge. Additionally, the artist hand-stitched beet-dyed threads creating marks referring to the passage of time. Domestic work is never done.
The installation piece Panos de Prato (kitchen towel in Portuguese) honors the daily rituals in Santos's grandmother’s kitchen. This project began during the pandemic in 2021. Santos and her two daughters were recorded making beet juice in the same way her grandma made it when the artist was a child. Beet juice was a staple at her grandma's house. It was her homemade concoction in place of gummy vitamins.
