I want to braid the largest rag rug possible and I can’t do it alone! I’m thinking of this as an opportunity to build a community art project on a global scale!
I’ve been making art around themes of with shared memories, personal and community history, and utilizing repurposed materials for a while now. Braiding rag rugs are something that I learned from my grandma. Her old hands, twisted from arthritis, would braid left over fabric and turn it into an utilitarian item for the house. Each piece of fabric brings a history of what it used to be before. I especially appreciate that rags rugs repurpose a “waste” material while helping preserve history and creating a new one.
I’ve been braiding non stop, and with my hands starting to resemble my grandmother’s, I’ve realized I need help. Friends have already joined, wanting to be part of THIS story, bringing their own little bit of history. It got me thinking this could be a much bigger effort and include the story of many more. And with fabric being a COMMON THREAD that ties human communities together, I see this as an chance to make a project that connets us all.
